Penn Wood is a nearly 8 acre site located outside the Wiltshire town of Calne. A former quarry, landfill and livestock grazing pasture, Penn Wood is now managed by the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust, who are rewilding the site, and have undertaken a tree planting project, with blackthorn, oak, ash, lime, black poplar, downy birch, Norway spruce and Scots pine trees.
Amongst the wood, poles have been placed to create perches for birds of prey, and mounting points for bat boxes.
Roe deer and badgers are known to be residents of Penn Wood, and is a refuge for slow worms which were relocated from a nearby housing development.
The paths in the wood are very narrow and bumpy so is not suitable for wheelchairs and buggies. The paths are also very overgrown during the summer, so trousers and a long sleeve top are recommended as protection from the encroaching nettles and brambles.
