On the northern edge of the Marlborough Downs within the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Barbury Castle which sits on the ancient Ridgeway route is an excellent location for outdoor activities.

With a large car park, it is a great location as a base for going on long walks or cycles along, either eastwards towards another hill fort, Liddington Castle, or westward to the UNESCO World Heritage site at Avebury.

Due to there being no major settlements nearby and largely agricultural activity surrounding the site, it is also a good location to see birds of prey, with Red Kites, Buzzards and Short Eared Owls being regularly seen.

If you are early enough in the morning then there is a good chance of seeing deer and badgers.
