Completed in 2014 and Managed by the Wildfowl & Wetland Trust, Steart Marshes has been developed as a flood defence. By creating a salt marsh for water to fill in to rather than flood the surrounding areas, the marshes protect the human activity near by, but also provide a rich habitat for wildlife.
The marshes are a great place to visit for those interested in watching nature. there are several high quality bird hides, with flat and well laid paths going between them which are wheelchair friendly.
As it's quite a large site, if you plan on visiting the farthest points from the car park, you may want to cycle around. This is quite easy as the paths are level and smooth.
Whilst the marshes are open to the public at all times, the toilets and hides are only open from 9am to 4.30pm. Outside of these times there is also a 2.1m height limit at the car park.
Something to note about the wetland is that the large salt marsh areas only flood at certain times of the year when the tides are particularly high, so if you may want to plan the timing of your visits accordingly. The WWT provide more information on the best times to visit, including a table on tide times, which can be found on their website.
