A relatively recent addition to Somerset's excellent collection of nature reserves, Shapwick Moor is in the process of being restored to a more wildlife friendly habitat from it's previous use as arable farmland.
By using more traditional farming methods the land, such as low intensity grazing, and late summer hay harvesting, it's hoped that the the land will return to a state that is more welcoming to wildlife.
The site has two small hides which overlook the meadows and can be used to spot birds of prey hunting for small animals that hide in the long grass.
Animals that can be spotted at Shapwick Moor include; buzzards, red kites, kestrel, sparrow hawk, barn owl, short eared owl, roe deer and badger. It may also be possible to see water vole and otters.
There is a good size car park at the site, and a smooth and level path leading along the edge of the site which is easy to traverse.
